یہ جدید دور کی بات نہیں ہے بلکہ قرون وسطیٰ سے ہی انگریزوں میں اپنی عورتوں کے لیے رقابت و غیرت نہیں پائی جاتی تھی. فی زمانہ تو حیا ، پاکدامنی ، ازدواجی تقدس اور وفاداری کا تصور ہی ختم ہوگیا ہے. 

یورپ میں نشاۃ ثانیہ سے پہلے کے دور کو قرون وسطیٰ (Middle Ages 5-15 CE) کہا جاتا ہے، اس دور میں عورتوں کو حد سے زیادہ آزادی حاصل تھی، عورت جس کے ساتھ چاہے رات گزارے مرد نہ اپنی بیوی کو کچھ کہتا تھا نہ ہی اس کی بیوی کے ساتھ زنا کرنے والے مرد پر اس کی غیرت جاگتی تھی. 

اپنی عورت کو لے کر ایک انگریز مرد میں دوسرے مرد کے لیے رقابت حسد بالکل نہیں ہے ، صلیبی جنگجوؤں کا ایک ہم عصر اسامہ اس حوالے سے انگریزوں کے احوال بیان کرتا ہے کہ؛ 

"فرنگیوں (انگریزوں) میں رقابت یا مردانہ غیرت کا ہلکا سا بھی شائبہ تک نہیں ہے. اگر کوئی انگریز(فرنگی) مرد اپنی بیوی کے ساتھ جارہا ہے، راستے میں انھیں ایک اور مرد ملتا ہے، وہ مرد اس کی بیوی کو ایک طرف کو لے جاتا ہے اور تنہائی میں اس سے باتیں کرنے لگتا ہے، تو (غیرت سے عاری) شوہر دور کھڑا ان کی باتیں ختم ہونے کا انتظار کرتا رہتا ہے. اگر ان کی باتیں طویل ہوجاتی ہیں تو (بے غیرت) شوہر اپنی بیوی کو اس مرد کے ساتھ وہیں تنہائی میں چھوڑ کر چلا جاتا ہے. 

یہ ایک نمونہ ہے جو میں نے دیکھا. میں نابلوس گیا تو ایک شخص کے گھر ٹھہرا جس کا نام معز تھا. اس کا گھر ایک سرائے تھی جس کی کھڑکیاں مشرق کی سمت میں کھلتی تھیں. اس کے سامنے سڑک کی دوسری طرف ایک فرنگی (انگریز) کا گھر تھا. وہ دوسرے سوداگروں کی شراب فروخت کرتا تھا… ایک دن وہ گھر آیا تو اس نے ایک مرد کو اپنی بیوی کے ساتھ بستر پر دیکھا. اس نے اجنبی مرد سے پوچھا : 

"تم میری بیوی کے پاس کیسے آئے ہو؟" 

تو اس اجنبی نے جواب دیا:

" میں نے بستر بچھا دیکھا تو میں اس پر لیٹ گیا." 

اس انگریز نے غیرت سے عاری ہوکر کہا:

"لیکن تمھارے ساتھ عورت بھی لیٹی ہے" 

اجنبی نے اطمینان سے جواب دیا :

" یہ اس عورت کا اپنا بستر ہے. میں اسے اس کے اپنے بستر پر آنے سے بھلا کیسے روک سکتا ہوں؟" 

اس عورت کے شوہر نے کہا:

" اگر تم نے پھر ایسا کیا تو ہمارا تمھارا جھگڑا ہوجائے گا."

 ایک اجنبی مرد کا اس کے گھر میں گھس کر اس کی ہی بیوی کے ساتھ اسی کے ہی بستر پر رات گزارنے پر… اس مرد کی رقابت اور ناخوشی کا بس اتنا سا ہی اظہار تھا! 

اس کی وجہ عیسائیوں کی کثرت سے سور خوری اور شراب خوری ہے شراب عقل پر پردہ ڈال دیتی ہے اور سور خوری، شرم حیا غیرت سب بھلا دیتی اور عفت عصمت پاکدامنی کی اہمیت بھلا دیتی ہے.

پھر مرد اپنی عورتوں کے لیے کبھی طیش میں نہیں آتا. 

غیرت کا یہ اہم ترین عنصر جانوروں میں بھی موجود ہے، جس مادہ کے ساتھ کسی نر کا جوڑا بن جائے پھر کوئی دوسرا نر اس مادہ کی طرف رخ نہیں کرتا. اور اگر کوئی کرتا ہے تو نر اپنی مادہ کے لیے خاک و خون میں لوٹ پوٹ ہوجاتا ہے. 

صرف سور واحد ایسا جانور ہے جس میں غیرت کا زرہ شائبہ نہیں ملتا ، جس کی وجہ اس کی غلاظت خوری ہے. جتنا مرضی اس کو فارموں کے صاف ستھرے ماحول میں رکھا جائے ، یہ وہاں بھی ایک دوسرے کی غلاظت گندگی کھا کر ہی سکون محسوس کرتے ہیں. سب سے زیادہ ورمز بیکٹریا سور کے گوشت میں پائے جاتے ہیں، امریکہ کی آدھی سے زیادہ آبادی سور خوری کی وجہ سے ہائپرٹینشن کی مریض ہے. 

قدرت نے سور کو ماحول میں اس لیے رکھا ہے تاکہ ماحول کی آلائشیں صاف ہوتی رہیں. 

لیکن انگریزوں نے خدائی احکامات کے خلاف جاکر ماحول کو صاف کرنے والے جانور کو اپنی خوراک بنایا اور سور کی طرح غیرت حمیت سے عاری ہوگئے.
